Mile Donovan - Contextual Investigation

This is ONE WEEK homework. 

Objectives
To further your understanding of graphic communication practitioners

Task
Using the web and my books, research and present a contextual investigation about the illustrator Miles Donovan.

The contents of the investigation should include the following. 

!!You will get extra marks if you draw, plan, describe and doodle elements relating to the investigation!!

1. Personal Response

Describe who the artist is. You could include major works, a map / info of the town of where they work, a drawing of the artist / their studio. Use your imagination. Do NOT include a biography.

Explain your personal response. Use the pink section on the WAYS OF LOOKING sheet to help your questioning and responses.

2. Comprehension

Criticise and analyse their work. Use the WAYS OF LOOKING sheet to help your questioning. 

3. Characteristics
Take a number of typical examples and bullet point why they are characteristic of the designer. Consider, what makes a typical Miles Donovan?

Sketchbook and Annotation Homework - Due in Monday 6th Nov

You are to hand in your up-to-date sketchbooks on Monday during the lesson. This means that you will have to ensure that all of the relevant practical and written work is presented to the best of your ability.

The pages that will be assessed will include:

• Hand-drawn typography
• Cut out letters from random texture paper
• Printed single letter
• Hand-drawn words for quote
• Work in progress shots from Photoshop
• Final quote poster design
• Anatomy of Typography HWK

Tips!

All of the pages of your sketchbook need some form of written annotation. The purpose of this is not to just to describe your journey but to record your ideas, observations, insights and independent judgements. It MUST be personal.
Please look at page 1 and 2 of the Annotation Hepsheet HERE. Just choose some (not all) of the questions to answer from each of the 4 headings.

Label your pages with cool headings.

If you like working digitally, feel free to do so and print off and stick in your book.

Make sure your annotations are legible and clear - feel free to be creative with your presentation! I want to be surprised and delighted with every turn of page.

Objective
To improve your skills when editing handmade images in Photoshop.

Task
Choose a musician, sports star, film star or somebody else who inspires you. Using an image sourced from the web, open in Photoshop and follow the first tutorial below.
** Ask me if the image is suitable for the task **

Presentation
In your sketchbook:

• put prints of your finished Photoshop examples
• work in progress shots from photoshop
• the raw stencils and sprays
• annotate thoroughly

Below are two tutorials for creating stencil spray work. They a taking a lead from the work of Miles Donovan whose work you can see above.

Annotating pages

Why do we annotate pages, what do you annotate and what do you write?
Basically, anything that the assessor needs to know and understand about your work. Most of this is hidden in your brain, you need to get it out.

The majority of annotation should happen at the time of making, not as an afterthought. You'll be surprised how much it can clarify your thinking and add a little extra unexpected spark to your work.

Therefore, annotation can take place...

* prior to work beginning (imagining, prioritising, explaining and inventing what you are attempting to do)
* during (evaluation of current ideas, analysis of work, comparisons)
* after (evaluations, concluding, giving opinions)

N.B If it's just a description of events, and has no personal element, it won't be good.

Stick some examples of your typography inspiration into your sketchbook - this might be screenshots from Pinterest or Dafont.

Be creative with your annotations, lift ups, overlays, writing over photos, labels, speech bubbles.

Photoshop colouring type

Make sure you wear headphones when listening to my tutorials! I really don't need to hear two versions of my voice in my room. 

This tutorial is useful for students who have pages of black and white type they wish to colour. When you watch, it will state that you have to make a full A-Z. Feel free to ignore this.
